Jennifer Woodburne graduated from UCT with a BA in Psychology and Drama cum laude and Performer’s Diploma in Speech and Drama in 1990.
She has extensive professional experience in training voice and performance both in South Africa and abroad. While in South Africa, she taught for the KWASA outreach programme in KwaZulu-Natal and The National School of the Arts in Gauteng. She was also instrumental in bringing Voice and Speech coaching to the Market Theatre Laboratory.
Jennifer moved to London in 1997 where she continued to teach Voice and Acting at the London School of Drama. Her skills were also harnessed in helping individuals seeking to present themselves in different settings such as interviewing skills and orations. She is known for her Improvisational skills in performance and was part of the original group of improvisers in Theatresports. This strong ability to use improvisation and non-verbal communication combined with her extensive performance experience has informed her highly effective style of teaching public speaking.
Her desire to bring the power of each individual’s voice to the fore was further developed when she worked with Professionals from the National Theatre Studio (UK). Working with trailblazers such as Patsy Rodenberg and Helen Chadwick, Jennifer adapted and added new aspects to her voice coaching. She incorporated Alexander Technique (which was originally developed to avoid voice loss during public speaking) into her approach to coaching voice, where she develops and improves the voice by working with habitual patterns of movement and posture.
Jennifer has been involved in Industrial Theatre from its infancy in the 1990s when the Corporate world was becoming more and more interested in reaching their own employees through the power of live interaction. She has workshopped and written scripts based on client specifications, using language and tone to communicate intended messages through writing. She has also worked with and taught English and articulation to a wide spectrum of clients. Jennifer has a passion for languages and is proficient in Spanish and French.
Jennifer collaborated and worked with many celebrated individuals across the field of acting and their respective influences have all contributed to her dynamic approach to teaching voice and public speaking. These individuals include Sir Antony Sher, Greg Doran (Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company) and Nancy Meckler (Artistic Director of The Shared Experience Company UK). Jennifer believes strongly that we all have a Voice that is unique and that with guidance one’s Voice will be liberated and heard!
